The modern rolling stock of the metropolitan transport is the key to high passenger comfort. This was stated on his channel in the messenger “Max” Sergey Sobyanin reported.
“Since 2011, a total of 496 new suburban trains have been purchased. In 2025, the renewal of trains on Moscow Central Diameters. The renewal rates of rolling stock in the Central Transport Hub are the highest in the world,” wrote the Mayor of Moscow.

In 2010, modern cars made up 12 percent of the metropolitan subway fleet, and their average age exceeded 20 years. Today, in terms of train renewal speed, the Moscow Metro ranks first among cities in Europe and America.
Thus, in 2026, more than 300 new cars will be delivered to the Moscow metro (mainly to the Zamoskvoretskaya line). The total share of new metro trains and Moscow Central Circle in the first six months of the current year increased to 82 percent. The average age of the wagons has decreased to less than 12 years. By 2030, this figure will reach more than 90 percent and 11 years — one of the highest rates of rolling stock renewal in the world.
“The plan involves annual deliveries of approximately 300 cars. By 2030, the share of new trains will exceed 90 percent, and the average age of the cars will be reduced to 11 years. Importantly, regions are involved in their production — this way the transport industry of the entire country develops,” emphasized Sergei Sobyanin.

Trams
In 2010, the share of modern trams was four percent, and their average age was 10 years. This year, Moscow completely renewed its tram fleet. It now includes 604 modern fully low-floor trams of Russian manufacture with an average age of 6.5 years.
Moscow Central Diameters and Central Transport Hub
In 2010, the share of modern suburban trains at the Central Transport Hub (CTU) was five percent, and their average age was 23 years.
During the past period (2011–2026), 496 new suburban trains were purchased, including the complete renewal of trains on the Moscow Central Diameters in 2025. The pace of rolling stock renewal at the Central Transport Hub is the highest in the world.
Last year, the renewal of the train fleet on the Yaroslavl direction began — the most in-demand route in the Central transport hub. By the end of this year, passengers will be transported by 35 new train sets of the latest generation “Ivolga 4.0” and “Korolek” (EP2DM). This accounts for 40 percent of the total number of trains operating in this direction. The rolling stock renewal on the Yaroslavl direction is mainly planned to be completed by 2030. In total, about 90 train sets will be purchased.
Currently, at the Tver Carriage Works, assembly work is underway for the “Ivolga 5.0 CTU” model cars, which will serve interregional routes of the Central transport hub.
Urban ground transportation
In 2010, the share of modern rolling stock in urban ground transportation was six percent, and the average age of the equipment was eight years. Now, the operational fleet of Mosgortrans includes 3.1 thousand modern eco-friendly electric buses. By the end of the current year, their total number will exceed 3.4 thousand units, with an average age of 4.3 years.
By the end of 2030, about three thousand more electric buses will arrive in Moscow, bringing their total number to over 5,900, and the share of electric buses in the Mosgortrans fleet will increase to 85 percent.
Driverless subway train
The country’s first driverless metro train based on the “Moscow-2024” model has run on Big Ring Line over 5.3 thousand kilometers in six and a half months of test operation. The testing launch took place in January 2026: the start was given by the President of Russia Vladimir Putin and the Mayor of Moscow Sergey Sobyanin. At the moment, trips are carried out without passengers.
As part of the testing, stops were practiced at all stations of the Large Circle Line (LCL) using RFID tags, and a test site for checking the incident prevention system in case of falling onto the tracks was set up at the pilot station “Pechatniki.”
In accordance with the transport development strategy, by the end of 2026, the driverless train will begin operating on the general schedule alongside other trains, considering the capital’s intervals of 90 seconds between runs, but initially without passengers.
In 2027, test trips with passengers are planned, and by 2030 the BCL will become the first fully driverless line of the Moscow metro.
