On August 29, a festival will be held in Perovsky Park “Summer Hvoztfest”. Visitors will be able to receive consultations from veterinarians and dog trainers, attend lectures on responsible animal care, and also support the wards of city shelters. An educational and creative program with quizzes and workshops will be prepared for children.
Health and upbringing of pets
Experts from the Russian Cynological Federation (RKF) will give lectures and consultations. RKF President’s adviser Evgeniy Kupliauskas will talk about a dog’s life in the city and the principles of responsible ownership, while Marianna Gladkikh, Associate Professor at Timiryazev Academy, will review the basic rules of pet upbringing. You can learn about the regulation of breeding activities, the legal status of breeders, marking and registration of pets at a presentation by RKF Vice-President’s adviser Milena Drebezova. Veterinarian Anastasia Proskurina will give a lecture “What a responsible owner needs to know.”
The educational program will include specialists from the University of Modern Cynology, the leading veterinary clinic network ‘White Fang,’ the company ‘Doctor More,’ and the Department of Animal Nutrition at the Russian State Agrarian University — Moscow Timiryazev Agricultural Academy. Zoo psychologist, cynologist, and dogsitter Daria Akulova will explain how to better understand a dog and make cohabitation calmer and more comfortable. Associate Professor of the Department of Animal Nutrition, Candidate of Biological Sciences Anzhelika Xenofontova will analyze the behavioral features of dogs and cats. The coordinator of educational programs, a specialist in animal neurology and behavioral medicine Irina Kern will conduct a session dedicated to responsible pet health care.
The festival will feature two lecture areas — one outdoors and one in a glass-enclosed pavilion. Visitors will be able to receive free consultations on pet health and proper feeding. Professional cynologists, ethologists, and canistherapists will be available to talk about training and behavior. RKF breeders will explain where to buy a puppy.
Fun competitions for dogs and performance by service animals
Dog owners, together with their pets, will be able to participate in fun races. They will be hosted by comedian and blogger Olga Parfenyuk.
From 11:00 to 13:00, dogs will run through an agility course for time. 15 four-legged athletes with the best results will advance to the next stage. From 13:00 to 14:30, the animals will have to overcome another obstacle course. The jury will consider not only the time but also the quality of task performance on each apparatus. From 15:00 to 16:00, dog owners will answer questions in a cynological quiz. From 16:00 to 16:30, five finalists will present pre-prepared acts with tricks and commands. The jury will evaluate difficulty, execution quality, artistry, and the pet’s connection with the owner. The award ceremony will take place from 16:30 to 17:00.
Everyone interested will also be able to see demonstration performances from two service dog training schools. RKF employee Marianna Gladkikh, along with the Dutch Shepherd Zorro, will demonstrate training exercises. Additionally, representatives from the service dog unit of one of the law enforcement agencies will perform.
An educational and creative program will be prepared for children. Participants in the “Doctor VIK School” workshop will learn about pet care and acquire practical veterinary skills related to the treatment and prevention of pet diseases. Athletes from the Russian Rugby Federation will conduct a session in which they will talk about a healthy lifestyle. In the art zone, it will be possible to draw your pet, create a craft using macrame techniques, and make a themed keychain. Quizzes dedicated to cats and dogs will be held at the participants’ stands.
Fair and Shelter Assistance
At the fair, Russian manufacturers of pet products will showcase pet food, leashes, beds, toys, and handmade items. Visitors will be able to visit the feeding area, receive gifts, participate in contests, and win prizes from partners.
Owners will be able to register their pets for free in the “Animal-ID” database and the digital service “All Animals,” as well as have them chipped. The site can be visited without a prior appointment.
A drinking area, a walking and grooming spot will be arranged for dogs. Special containers with bags and bins for collecting pet waste will be installed on the site. In addition, a place will be set up for four-legged festival visitors where they can rest away from the large number of people and animals, as well as a functional unloading zone where they can calmly explore the surrounding space. It will feature objects made from natural leafy and grassy materials, special sniffing mats with treats, and developmental toys. Moreover, animals will have sessions with a trainer for nose work (a discipline in which dogs are trained to find specific scents). Part of the space will be equipped for pet rest and training sessions with an agility instructor.
In the charity area, visitors will be able to visit the stands of nine participants. Among them are the municipal shelters “Malinki” and “Dubovaya Roscha,” the network of modern dog shelters “Povodog” (a project of the “Volnoe Delo” foundation), four breed-specific support centers—”Husky Help,” “Alabay Help,” “White Swiss Shepherd Help Team,” and a foundation helping French Bulldogs—as well as a cat aid foundation and the charitable foundation for animal aid and protection “Step into a Happy Life.” Guests will have the opportunity to meet the organizations’ wards and learn their stories.
“We are used to thinking that loving a dog is simple. But responsibility begins where affection ends. To ensure that a pet does not end up on the street, one must know what it needs—both physically and psychologically. The ‘Summer Tailfest’ is held so that people can assess their readiness to become an owner,” shared Svetlana Alekseeva, co-founder of the charitable foundation ‘Bring Happiness Home,’ and a member of the interdepartmental working group under the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia on responsible handling of pets.
