At Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, the International Polytechnic Summer School 2026 continues. Based at SPbPU’s campus, 26 young scientists from different countries successfully completed the training program “Ensuring Safety and Operation of Nuclear Power Plants.” This course became part of the large-scale project “Summer Institute. Obninsk Tech: train-the-trainers,” initiated by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation with the support of the State Corporation “Rosatom.”
Young teachers and researchers from the countries where Rosatom is present: Indonesia, Tanzania, Bangladesh, the Republic of Belarus, Hungary, Malaysia, Serbia, and Vietnam, are undergoing training at leading competency centers of the nuclear industry, including the Obninsk Institute of Nuclear Power Engineering, Rosatom Technical Academy, Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, and SPbGETU “LETI”.
I am very glad to have had the opportunity to participate in such a large-scale educational project. Working hand in hand with leaders of domestic nuclear education is a great responsibility. In this program, Polytechnic addressed one of the most important issues for all countries where the State Corporation “Rosatom” operates — the safety of facilities using nuclear energy. The audience’s reaction showed that they no longer have any doubts about the reliability and safety of domestic nuclear power projects. This is the main result of the educational project, which we can all be proud of,” noted the program director, Associate Professor of the Higher School of Nuclear and Thermal Energy, Yaroslav Vladimirov.
Within the module, participants studied in detail the key topics: the thermal scheme of a nuclear power plant with a water-water energetic reactor, turbine island equipment, maintenance and repair of nuclear power plant equipment. The attendees took part in the master class “Modeling the operating modes of a nuclear power plant using the PTC VEB,” as well as analyzed the principles of safety assurance, nuclear power plant safety systems, and probabilistic safety analysis.
The participants not only immersed themselves in the educational process but also got acquainted with the culture and history of Russia: excursions were organized for them to the Atomic Energy Museum based at the world’s first nuclear power plant in Obninsk, as well as sightseeing tours of Moscow and Saint Petersburg.
The main goal of the program is to promote domestic education in the field of nuclear technologies and to introduce representatives from foreign countries within Rosatom’s area of interest to Russian approaches to the design, construction, and operation of nuclear energy facilities. The acquired knowledge will allow participants to supplement the educational process within the courses they conduct at their universities and to share with a broad international audience the Russian approaches to the design, construction, and operation of nuclear power plants.
SPbPU continues to strengthen its position as a leading center of international nuclear education, opening its doors to teachers and researchers from around the world.
