The first mid-class electric bus “E-Citymax-9” has arrived at the Mosgortrans operational site “Ostankino.” It has already begun testing on route No. 286 “Platform Yauza” — “Academician Lyulka Square.” This was reported by the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry. Maxim Liksutov.
“We continue to develop the capital’s ground electric transport, as directed by Sergey Sobyanin. A mid-class electric bus is already being tested on route No. 286. Over nine months, Mosgortrans specialists will check the performance of the innovative vehicle in various weather and road conditions. Based on the test results, we will decide on purchasing new equipment for operation on the routes,” added Maxim Liksutov.
Advantages of the mid-class electric bus “E-Citymax-9”
The new bus is unique in that it can accommodate up to 70 passengers at the same time, and its range is up to 80 kilometers. The “E-Citimax-9” is just as comfortable as all Moscow electric buses. It features USB ports for charging gadgets on the go, media screens with information about the route and stops, driver call buttons and a fold-down ramp for passengers with limited mobility, as well as a modern climate control system, a low floor, and two storage areas for strollers and bicycles.
Since 2018, innovative electric-powered transport has been coming to the capital. Today, the ground electric transport network covers all districts of the capital. Modern equipment features smooth movement, absence of noise and vibrations, which ensures an even higher level of travel comfort for passengers. The main advantage of electric buses is that they have no impact on the city’s ecology.
As of today, there are more than 300 electric bus routes in Moscow. On weekdays, passengers make on average over 1.2 million trips on them, and since 2018 their total number has exceeded 1.1 billion.
With new equipment deliveries and the development of charging infrastructure, even more electric bus routes will appear in the city. Moscow’s order for the creation of new equipment supports employment in the regions and stimulates the development of domestic industry.
Electric transport provides the highest level of service and meets the strictest safety standards. Low-floor electric buses are fully adapted for the comfort of passengers with limited mobility. They are equipped with a fold-down ramp and driver call buttons. If necessary, the driver will assist in boarding and alighting the vehicle. Bicycles, strollers, or large luggage can be conveniently placed on the storage platform. USB ports are available inside the cabin for charging gadgets. Additionally, media screens display up-to-date information about upcoming stops and possible transfers. The climate control system ensures an optimal temperature at any time of the year. An air curtain, which activates when the doors open, helps maintain this temperature inside the cabin.
In addition, there are buttons for targeted door opening. For passenger safety, the vehicle is equipped with cameras both outside and inside. Near the doors, there are digital validators that allow payment for the ride in any convenient way.
Since 2022, the capital has been supplied with improved configuration vehicles. These electric buses feature adaptive interior lighting that changes from a cool shade to a warm one at 2:00 PM for passenger comfort. The front route indicator has been increased by 18 percent, allowing the number to be seen from a distance. An electric heater has been installed inside, which does not affect the environment and maintains an optimal temperature. In addition, the new vehicles’ range has increased from 40–50 kilometers to 80–90 kilometers, while the vehicle weight has remained the same.
Today, eco-friendly transport is serviced at 12 Mosgortrans sites. Moscow was the first in Russia to start building modern electric bus depots. In 2022, the first electric bus depot in Russia and the largest in Europe, “Krasnaya Pakhra,” opened in TiNAO. The vehicles began operating routes in the Novomoskovsky and Troitsky Administrative Districts. A year later, the “Mitino” depot was built in the northwest. With its opening, eco-friendly transport started running on routes in 20 districts of the capital and two nearby towns in the Moscow Region. At the end of 2023, the third innovative electric bus depot, “Saltykovka,” became operational. It serves routes in the eastern part of the city.
In 2025, the city saw the arrival of the new generation KamAZ-52222 electric buses. They have become even more comfortable thanks to a redesigned interior layout, a 15 percent larger standing area, places for hand luggage, and modified door construction. Additionally, the efficiency of the climate system has increased, and the doors now feature light strips indicating door opening and closing. The exterior of the vehicles now aligns more closely with modern trends in global industrial design. The new generation electric buses are developed based on the operational experience of earlier models and passenger feedback. Since the start of their operation, they have traveled over 10 million kilometers on routes and have proven themselves well in service. The unique vehicles are maintained at 10 Mosgortrans facilities.
According to data from the Moscow Environmental Monitoring Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, thanks to the replacement of buses with electric buses in Moscow from 2018 to 2025, it was possible to avoid the emission into the atmosphere of about 1.3 thousand tons of pollutants and 300 thousand tons of CO2-equivalent greenhouse gases in total. In 2025 alone, it was possible to avoid the emission of almost 380 tons of pollutants and 110 thousand tons of CO2-equivalent greenhouse gases.
