The opening of the Solovetsky School of Young Scientists “Okoyom” took place at the Youth Center of the Arkhangelsk Region. The research program united 50 young researchers from 12 regions of Russia: Arkhangelsk Region, Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Novosibirsk, Zaporizhzhia, Tver, Novgorod, Tomsk, Smolensk, and Yaroslavl regions, as well as the Republic of Karelia. From August 22 to September 1, participants will work on the Solovetsky Archipelago on projects to preserve the natural and historical-cultural heritage of the Solovki.
“The Solovetsky Archipelago is one of Russia’s main spiritual centers. In 2029, by decree of President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, the 600th anniversary of the founding of the first monastic settlement here will be celebrated. Thanks to the implementation of the national project “Youth and Children” within the framework of the Solovetsky School of Young Scientists “Okoyom,” young people from 12 regions of Russia will be able to engage with the natural and historical-cultural heritage of the archipelago and contribute to the study and preservation of these places. Participants will need to conduct research and develop projects on a wide range of topics—from book publishing and scientific volunteering to biotechnology and engineering,” noted Deputy Prime Minister, co-chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation for the Preservation and Development of the Solovetsky Archipelago Dmitry Chernyshenko.
The school is an off-site educational program aimed at gaining research and project experience. Participants will have to solve real problems related to the study, preservation, and development of the natural and historical-cultural heritage of the Solovetsky Archipelago. The program unites 12 thematic workshops. Participants will work in the fields of biotechnology, ecology, engineering, music, book arts, information technology, educational design, science popularization, scientific volunteering, and media.
“The Solovetsky School will bring together 50 young researchers to work on scientific and local history tasks related to the archipelago. Participants will study the state of nature – water, soil, air, create interactive maps and ecological routes. In addition, the young people will become acquainted with the cultural traditions of the Russian North and develop maps of memory sites of the Solovetsky camp. The research results will be handed over to the Solovetsky Museum-Reserve: they will form the basis of its scientific and educational work, as well as be included in the curricula of schools and educational centers of the region,” emphasized the head of Rosmolodezh, Grigory Gurov.
The Solovetsky School of Young Scientists “Okuoym” is organized by the Center for Young Researchers “Polyus” (a Rosmolodezh project) in collaboration with the Northern (Arctic) Federal University named after M.V. Lomonosov and the Solovetsky State Historical-Architectural and Natural Museum-Reserve. It has been included in the annual comprehensive plan of events for youth in the Solovetsky Islands, within which a sustainable educational and research environment is being formed — ranging from applied ecological and historical routes to long-term scientific and methodological programs.
“For our university, working at Solovki is not a one-time event, but a systematic, long-term activity. Our summer schools have been held here since 2014. This tradition has reached a new, federal level in the format of the ‘Okoyom’ school. SAFU approaches heritage preservation comprehensively and interdisciplinarily,” noted Mikhail Danilov, rector of M.V. Lomonosov Northern (Arctic) Federal University.
The School of Young Scientists “Okoyom” operates within the framework of the national project “Youth and Children,” which is being implemented under the instructions of the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin.
