Modern electric buses have been put into service on route No. 260. They operate in five districts of the Western and Southwestern administrative districts and connect five metro stations and Moscow Central Diameters (MCD) with parks, squares, educational and medical institutions. This was reported by the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry Maxim Liksutov.
“We continue to replace buses with modern eco-friendly electric buses, as instructed by Sergei Sobyanin. On the new electric bus route, nine innovative vehicles of Russian manufacture will operate on weekdays. Trips to attraction points in the Western and South-Western Administrative Okrugs will become even more comfortable,” noted Maxim Liksutov.
Electric buses of route No. 260 stop at the metro stations “Universitet”, “Lomonosovsky Prospekt”, and “Minskaya”, as well as at the MCD stations Minskaya and Matveyevskaya.
Eco-friendly transport
Innovative electric-powered transport has been introduced in Moscow since 2018. Today, electric buses operate in all districts of the city. They are characterized by smooth and silent movement without vibrations, making trips more comfortable for passengers. In addition, electric buses do not pollute the air, which is especially important for a metropolis.
More than three thousand electric buses are operating in the capital. On weekdays, passengers make an average of over 1.2 million trips on them, and since 2018 the total number of trips has exceeded 1.1 billion.
According to the data from MosEcoMonitoring of the capital Department of Natural Resources Management and Environmental Protection, replacing buses with electric buses from 2018 to 2025 allowed preventing the emission of about 1.3 thousand tons of pollutants and approximately 300 thousand tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in greenhouse gases. In 2025 alone, it was possible to avoid the emission of about 380 tons of pollutants and approximately 110 thousand tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in greenhouse gases.
With new deliveries of equipment and the development of charging infrastructure, more electric bus routes will appear in the capital. Moscow’s order for the production of such equipment also contributes to the development of domestic industry and supports employment in the regions.
Comfortable trips
Electric buses are adapted for passengers with limited mobility. The interiors are equipped with a folding ramp and driver call buttons, and the driver will assist with boarding and alighting if necessary. The storage area can accommodate a bicycle, stroller, or large luggage.
USB ports are installed for charging gadgets, and media screens display information about nearby stops and transfers. The climate control system maintains a comfortable temperature at any time of the year. When the doors open, an air curtain automatically turns on, helping to maintain it inside the cabin.
In addition, there are buttons for targeted door opening. Video cameras inside and outside the electric buses monitor security. Digital validators are located near the doors, allowing passengers to pay for their ride.
Since 2022, upgraded electric buses have been delivered to Moscow. The cabins feature adaptive lighting: at 14:00, the cold light tone changes to a warm one. The front route indicator has been increased by 18 percent, making the number more visible from a distance. The electric heater maintains the necessary temperature inside the cabin and does not have a negative impact on the environment. The range has increased from 40–50 to 80–90 kilometers, while the vehicle’s weight has remained the same.
Electric bus fleets
Electric buses are serviced at 12 Mosgortrans sites. The capital was the first in Russia to start building specialized parks for electric transport. In 2022, the largest electric bus park in Europe, “Krasnaya Pakhra,” opened in the Troitsky and Novomoskovsky Administrative Districts (TiNAO). Eco-friendly vehicles were launched on routes in TiNAO.
A year later, the “Mitino” park was built in the northwest of the capital. With its opening, electric buses began operating on routes in 20 districts of Moscow and two nearby cities in the Moscow region. At the end of 2023, the third innovative park — “Saltykovka” — started working, serving routes in the eastern part of the capital.
In 2025, new generation KamAZ-52222 electric buses were launched on routes. They redesigned the interior layout, increased the standing area by 15 percent, provided spaces for carry-on luggage, and changed the door design. The climate system became more efficient, and light strips that signal opening and closing appeared on the doors. The external appearance of the vehicles also changed — it was developed taking into account modern trends in industrial design.
The model was created taking into account the experience of operating previous generation electric buses and passenger feedback. Since their launch, such vehicles have traveled more than 10 million kilometers on Moscow routes. They are now serviced at 10 Mosgortrans facilities.
