As part of the latest competition, 97 new youth laboratories have been selected to receive funding for conducting scientific research. By the end of this year, another 23 laboratories will be selected. Thus, by 2026, 120 new laboratories will be operational based at universities and research organizations.
“Our President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin regularly emphasizes the importance of supporting young scientists. Creating youth laboratories within the framework of the national project ‘Youth and Children’ helps provide conditions for unlocking the potential of such researchers. Currently, more than 9,000 researchers work in 971 laboratories, including over 6,000 young scientists under the age of 39. By 2026, it is planned to open at least 120 more such laboratories. Already, 97 have been selected,” said Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko.
The project’s goal is to create conditions for the systematic support and development of youth research activities aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of Russian science and strengthening the country’s scientific potential.
“Youth laboratories provide talented students and graduate students with the opportunity to engage in significant science already within the walls of universities. It is important that the program has become in demand among high-tech companies: researchers create solutions and develop products that are implemented in production. Among the program’s partners are such major companies as Rostselmash, Cryotrade Engineering, Rosatom, JSC Reshetnev, and JSC Shchelkovo Agrohim,” said the head of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, Valery Falkov.
Experience working in laboratories becomes a significant foundation for a career in scientific institutes and technology companies, the minister noted.
Youth laboratories fully meet the objectives of national projects for technological leadership. They operate in areas such as new materials and chemistry, technological support for food security, industrial support for transport mobility, new health preservation technologies, bioeconomy, and new energy technologies.
The largest number of youth laboratories have been established in research organizations and universities located in the Central, Siberian, and Volga Federal Districts. The leading regions in terms of their number are: Moscow (226 laboratories), Saint Petersburg (68 laboratories), Novosibirsk Oblast (86 laboratories), Tomsk Oblast (43 laboratories), Sverdlovsk Oblast (42 laboratories).
