Dear friends, colleagues! Today we celebrate the Day of the State Flag of the Russian Federation. In the Year of Unity of the Peoples of Russia, this holiday has a special meaning, as the official symbol of our multinational country connects the destinies of many generations.
The history of the tricolor spans more than three centuries: it was first raised in 1668 on the Russian warship “Oryol” during the reign of Alexei Mikhailovich Romanov, the father of Peter I. After becoming emperor, Peter Alekseyevich legalized the white-blue-red banner as the flag of the Russian merchant fleet. From 1858, by order of Emperor Alexander II, a black-yellow-white flag was used on ceremonial occasions. In 1865, these colors were mentioned in an imperial decree as state colors. Under Alexander III, two types of flags were in use — both black-yellow-white and white-blue-red. It was only in 1896 that Nicholas II officially approved the white-blue-red flag as the state flag.
From 1917 to 1991, the symbol of the country—the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics—was the red banner.
A new milestone in the history of the Russian flag began on August 22, 1991, when the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR decided to restore the white-blue-red banner. Three years later, by decree of the President of the Russian Federation, August 22 was declared the Day of the State Flag of the Russian Federation.
The white-blue-red flag is not just an attribute of power; it is a visible unifying symbol. It binds together the multinational and multicultural space of Russia, serving as an embodiment of the citizens’ unity, their love for the Motherland, and their readiness to defend its interests. Today, all who love their homeland, are proud of its history and achievements, who feel responsible for its future and contribute to its prosperity, pay tribute to the symbol of our state.
Russia is currently going through a difficult phase in its history. The country is defending its sovereignty and national interests in the world, society is becoming more monolithic, significant social initiatives are being launched, and technological development is gaining momentum. At this time, the role of each person is important. From thousands of individual efforts, the country’s strength is forged and its future is created.
