At GUU, schoolchildren got acquainted with engineering that is already changing the world

What if engineering is not just formulas and drawings?
High school students who participated in the educational camp received the answer to this question “Step into the Future”, which took place at the State University of Management.

The event brought together students of grades 10–11 and experts from the Advanced Engineering School (AES) “RosGeoTech” of the Grozny State Oil Technical University named after M.D. Millionshchikov. The main task of the camp is to show future students what modern engineering is really about and why it holds the future of various industries.

From theory to the technologies of the future

Before the program began, the participants were greeted by the head of the Advanced Engineering School, Andrey Luzhetsky, and the head of the Scientific Research Coordination Department of the State University of Management, Maksim Pletnyov, told the participants about the work of the Advanced Engineering School “RosGeoTech”. Today, the school develops projects in several technological areas simultaneously: from alternative energy and power engineering to the oil and gas industry, unmanned systems, and robotics.

But the most interesting part began when the conversation shifted from general directions to specific projects.

Specialist of the Engineering Project Management Center Nikita Akinshin invited schoolchildren to take a look inside a modern engineering laboratory — the place where ideas turn into working technologies.
We don’t just show slides — we give you the opportunity to look into real projects that are changing today’s landscape“, he noted.
And this really became one of the main features of the meeting.

Soviet off-road vehicle with 21st-century technologies

One of the projects that the participants learned about was the restoration and extensive modernization of the LUAZ 967M vehicle.

At first glance, it looks like a typical Soviet off-road vehicle, well known to enthusiasts of domestic machinery. But specialists at the Engineering Project Management Center see much more in it.

Based on LUAZ 967M a demonstrator of future technologies is being created. The car is being modernized, equipped with an electric powertrain and modern control systems. In the future, the plan also includes implementing driverless, autonomous technologies in the car.

For the kids participating in the workshop, this became a vivid example of how an engineer can take an existing design and literally rethink it using modern technologies.

Drones, autonomy, and artificial intelligence

The topic of unmanned technologies sparked particular interest among high school students. And it’s no surprise: drones have long ceased to be exclusively part of science fiction and are increasingly entering various spheres of life.

Nikita Akinshin spoke about the development of a highly maneuverable high-speed unmanned aerial vehicle, as well as a portable anti-drone system designed to protect critical facilities.

Participants were able to see a model of the drone and understand how its navigation systems and computer vision technologies work. What usually seems like a complex and distant topic from school life turned out to be quite understandable at the meeting: behind the drone’s flight stand mathematics, physics, programming, electronics, and many engineering solutions that must work as a single whole.

A modern engineer is not just a designer

The modern engineer increasingly works not only with metal, mechanisms, and electronics. His tools are data, algorithms, and artificial intelligence.

Schoolchildren were told about a hybrid decision support system (DSS) that combines machine learning (ML) and large language models (LLM). ML helps to obtain accurate predictions based on data, while LLM interprets and works with the information at a higher level.

This approach clearly demonstrates how much the engineering profession itself is changing. Today, it is not enough to simply create a device. It is important to teach it to “see,” analyze what is happening, make decisions, and interact with the environment.

The task of modern engineers is not only to design “hardware” but also to create intelligent systems that control this very “hardware” and analyze data. It is at the intersection of these disciplines that the most breakthrough solutions are born.“, — emphasized Nikita Akinshin.

The first step to a great engineering career

The training camp “Step into the Future” became an opportunity for schoolchildren to see the engineering profession not from the perspective of a textbook, but from within.
In one day, the participants saw how fundamental sciences, robotics, unmanned systems, artificial intelligence, and real engineering projects are interconnected. And most importantly — they were able to see that the technologies of the future are being created right now. They are created by engineers, researchers, and students who are ready to experiment, seek unconventional solutions, and constantly learn new things.

Perhaps for some participants, this meeting will become the very first step towards a future profession.
