Wuhan, August 13 /Xinhua/ — Mosquitoes cause many problems in summer — buzzing, biting, and making park visitors hide indoors. Today, an increasing number of Chinese cities are trying to deal with them using more modern methods.
According to local authorities, “smart” traps mimicking human breathing have been installed in some parks of Wuhan, the administrative center of Hubei Province /Central China/, which have destroyed more than 70,000 mosquitoes over more than 20 days.
Each such device, shaped like a black cylinder, emits carbon dioxide and a special light to attract mosquitoes, then sucks them into a sealed container where they die from dehydration.
“The device emits carbon dioxide at a certain concentration to simulate human breathing,” said Wang Zemin, a senior engineer at one of the large lakeside parks in the city.
In addition, the device includes light of a specific spectrum that attracts mosquitoes and increases the overall trapping efficiency. The number of these trapped insects is displayed in real time on the electronic display of the device.

Wuhan, which is located on the banks of the Yangtze River, is known for its hot summers and numerous lakes. The city has long been struggling with the problem of mosquito proliferation, with parks situated on the lake shores being particularly vulnerable areas.
The administration of Jianghan district in Wuhan city chose two large parks to implement a pilot program, installing 10 such traps in areas with dense vegetation and high humidity, where mosquitoes easily breed, as well as near playgrounds and public pavilions. Each device covers an area of 100 to 200 square meters.
According to Jiang Tao, an employee of the district urban management department, since the launch of the pilot program in mid-July, more than 70,000 mosquitoes have been eliminated using these traps.
Local authorities stated that they will adjust the program based on the effectiveness of the devices and intensify planned measures to combat mosquitoes in residential areas and alleys.
Wuhan is not the only city implementing high-tech methods for pest control. Similar “smart” traps have also been installed in Beijing, Jinan, and the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

More than 2,000 such devices have been installed throughout the city, enabling the creation of real-time mosquito population density maps.
From traps that mimic breathing to high-precision laser devices and AI-based monitors – all these Chinese-made technologies share a common goal: to replace chemical aerosols with smarter and more environmentally friendly solutions.
For the insect that is the disease vector, every stage of its life – from reproduction and survival of larvae to maturation and overwintering – is closely linked to factors such as precipitation, temperature, and humidity.
