Danil Khramov, a graduate of the Institute of Biomedical Systems and Biotechnology at SPbPU, took first place in the all-Russian student development competition in the field of food technologies, organized by VkusVill. The expert committee, which included representatives of the R&D team and supervisors of scientific and educational projects, highly praised the project “Editing of the pea storage protein — vicilin” for its breakthrough developments in creating innovative raw materials.
Danil has developed a technology for cultivating a new variety of peas with a more balanced protein composition, which could potentially become the basis for producing lines of functional food products and alternative dishes for vegetarians and vegans. The expert committee expressed interest in continuing cooperation with the author to further develop the project and is considering the possibility of a pilot launch of the development at partner production facilities for subsequent inclusion in the brand’s product range.
More than 50 promising projects from 24 leading specialized universities in the country participated in the competition. The final included ten students from the graduating bachelor’s and master’s courses of the Siberian State University of Science and Technology named after Academician M. F. Reshetnev, the Russian Biotechnology University (ROSBIOTECH), the Ural Federal University named after the first President of Russia B. N. Yeltsin, the Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, the National Research University ITMO, Omsk State Technical University, Cherepovets State University, the Ural State University of Economics, and the Kuban State Technological University. The winner of the pitch session held in Moscow was Danila Khramov’s project.
All the winners and finalists demonstrated an impressive level of preparation. We saw viable business ideas with a strong scientific foundation. We sincerely hope that in the near future, the participants’ projects will find practical application in partner productions, and the authors themselves will become part of the large team of innovators at VkusVill, — commented Guzel Davletshina, an academic expert in biotechnology and food systems at the company.
