Taiyuan, August 5 /Xinhua/ — On a summer morning in the gardens of Xinjiang County, Shanxi Province /Northern China/, active work is underway: farmers carefully harvest ripe bright red nectarines. After sorting, the fruits are placed in refrigerators for preliminary cooling, then transported by refrigerated trucks to the Khorgos checkpoint in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region /XUAR, Northwest China/, from where the fruits are immediately sent to Russia.
Xinjiang County is an important base for nectarine cultivation in Northern China. The total nectarine planting area here is approximately 70,000 mu /about 4,670 hectares/, with an annual harvest reaching 180,000 tons. Every third fruit harvested is exported, with Russia being the largest export destination. Once local nectarines could hardly access foreign markets, but today supplies have become regular. This has been made possible thanks to the optimization of all production and logistics chains.
A key condition for export was compliance with strict phytosanitary requirements for imported fruit and vegetable products in Russia. The favorable soil and climatic conditions of the Fenhe River valley create natural prerequisites for growing sweet nectarines, but for international supplies, natural potential alone is not enough. According to Cui Zhenhu, chairman of the local nectarine industry development association, the harvest is conducted according to clearly established rules: fruits with cracks, defective shapes, or uneven coloring are subject to rejection.
In the sorting workshops, the fruits are precisely sorted by diameter: 50, 55, and 60 mm. After sorting, the nectarines are cooled for at least 24 hours at a temperature of 0-3 degrees Celsius until the internal temperature of the fruit drops below 2 degrees. During transportation in refrigerated vehicles, the temperature regime of 2-5 degrees is maintained. Employees of Yuncheng Customs conduct inspections directly at plantations and production facilities, monitoring pesticide content levels and compliance with quarantine regulations.
Nevertheless, thanks to “cloud checks” and a 24/7 customs service for perishable goods, the time for customs procedures is estimated to be reduced by more than 60 percent. Under favorable conditions, freshly harvested fruits reach the shelves of Russian stores in just 7 days.
Over many years of development, a complete industrial ecosystem for growing nectarines has been formed in this county, which gives an impetus to further development of international markets.
At the cultivation stage, local producers combine greenhouse and open-field growing, which has allowed the harvesting period of nectarines to be extended from May to the end of August, and the year-round product supply cycle exceeds 4 months. The advantage of off-season deliveries has significantly increased the product’s competitiveness.
According to statistics, the annual export volume of nectarines from Xinjiang County is about 60 thousand tons, and the entire industry provides employment for more than 20 thousand local residents. Currently, the export geography of nectarines from this county covers 8 countries, including Russia, Vietnam, Kazakhstan, and the United Arab Emirates.
