Kunming, August 5 /Xinhua/ — More than 1,200 people were evacuated after a fire broke out on Tuesday at a chemical plant in Kunming, the administrative center of Yunnan province /Southwest China/, releasing irritating fumes into the atmosphere, local authorities reported on Wednesday.
A fire broke out around 11:50 on Tuesday during the loading of yellow phosphorus at the Yunnan Haoming fine phosphorus chemical company in the Jinning district, according to a press release published by the local government.
The fire was extinguished at 22:07 on Tuesday, with no reports of fatalities or injuries.
The accident led to the ignition of yellow phosphorus, and the smoke and dust resulting from the combustion caused a temporary deterioration of air quality in the surrounding areas. It is known that inhaling such vapors and smoke causes irritation of the eyes, nose, and respiratory tract.
