Industrial Expedition of the Center for Technological Leadership: Polytech Presented Competencies for University Cooperation

Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University became the final point of the industrial expedition route — a new format of cooperation among leading Russian universities launched by the Center for Technological Leadership. Industrial expeditions help universities study each other’s strengths, exchange experiences, find new areas of cooperation, and replicate best practices to achieve technological leadership.

At the Research Building of “Technopolis Polytech,” delegations from Tomsk State University of Control Systems and Radioelectronics (TUSUR), led by Rector Viktor Rulevskiy, and the Center for Technological Leadership, led by Director Irina Zhukova, familiarized themselves with the best practices of scientific and technological development of SPbPU, infrastructure in the fields of digital engineering, digital twin technologies, radiophysics, unmanned aerial systems, small spacecraft, telecommunications, and information security.

In the logic of industrial expeditions, Polytech acted not simply as a host, but as one of the key points on the map of Russia’s scientific and technological competencies. The task of the format was to see how the university operates from the inside: the organization of engineering teams, infrastructure development, management decision-making, and the transformation of scientific developments into technologies for the real economy sector.

An industrial expedition is a tool that allows universities to see each other not through presentations, but through real work: how laboratories are organized, how relationships with industry are built, how decisions are made. Our goal is to find genuine points of intersection where the competencies and experience of the teams can combine into a common result. It is through live exchange and the search for new cooperation points that a map of technological competencies is formed, and universities move from dialogue to joint projects, — outlined the goal of the industrial expedition, the director of the Center for Technological Leadership, Irina Zhukova.

We have been in friendly contact with TUSUR for a long time, and there are a number of topics on which we are already implementing joint projects. But this is our first comprehensive meeting of this kind. If we find points of convergence on the projects that interest you, we will be glad to new systematic cooperation and the emerging prospects, — welcomed the guests Vitaliy Sergeev, the first vice-rector of SPbPU.

“We came to share the key project of our university and are seeking cooperation, because one university cannot encompass all competencies, — said the rector of TUSUR, Viktor Rulevsky. —We have always had a trusting, good relationship with Polytech, so if you consider it possible and necessary to support us, we would be glad.

After these words, Viktor Rulevsky presented the project “Scientific and Technological Platform for Next-Generation Hybrid Communication,” in which TUSUR serves as the coordinator and system integrator.

“Hybrid communication systems will, in the future, enable communication between, for example, a subscriber with a regular phone and a satellite. Everyone is striving for this, and for that, it is necessary to develop various algorithms, systems, and devices. St. Petersburg Polytechnic possesses substantial knowledge and capabilities in the field of microwave electronics and communication systems, understanding how interaction protocols are ensured,— explained Viktor Rulevsky. “— Considering the pace of life, when everything needs to be done quickly, cooperation is definitely unavoidable.”

Then the participants of the industrial expedition got acquainted with the scientific and educational resources of Polytech. Dmitry Moskvin, Associate Professor of the Higher School of Cybersecurity at the Institute of Computer Science and Cybersecurity, told the guests about the institute, and the rest of the program was devoted to exploring the research and engineering infrastructure at NIK: they visited the Polytechnic Supercomputer Center, the Research and Production Center of the Institute of Mechanical Engineering, Materials and Transport, the scientific laboratory “Microelectronics (Design Center for Integrated Circuit Design)” of the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunications, the joint laboratory of SPbPU and the Special Technology Center, the Scientific and Technological Educational Space “TVEL — SPbPU” (PISh “Digital Engineering” SPbPU) and the Scientific and Educational Center “Gazpromneft — Polytech”.

The final part of the expedition was a working session. University representatives discussed the observed practices, compared the teams’ competencies, and identified possible directions for collaboration on strategic technology projects.

Concluding the meeting, Viktor Rulevsky noted: It is important for us that agreements are made not only at the leadership level but also at the level of line executors and responsible people implementing these systems. Sometimes one meeting solves much more than several conference calls or video conferences. Therefore, I hope that today’s meeting will help us find and strengthen these connections.

“TUSUR is one of the leading universities in Russia in the field of space topics and microelectronics. Therefore, of course, cooperation with the university on these topics is extremely interesting and promising for us, — Vitaly Sergeev summed up. — It is quite possible that we will join some large project and, as a result, be able to better realize the synergistic effect from using our technologies in TUSUR projects, including by utilizing the material and technical resources of our colleagues for developing the products we work on. In any case, cooperation between the two strong universities will have a positive effect.”
