Lhasa, August 2 /Xinhua/ — Cross-border trade resumed on August 1 at the Nathu La mountain pass in the Tibet Autonomous Region / Southwest China. Local authorities reported this on Sunday.
The Nathu La mountain pass is located at an altitude of 4545 meters above sea level between Yatung County in the Shigatse Prefecture of the Tibet Autonomous Region and the Indian state of Sikkim. Cross-border trade was temporarily closed here in 2020. Before the closure, the total volume of imports and exports reached 73 million yuan (about 10.8 million US dollars) in 2019.
Yatung County serves as one of the main gateways for China’s trade with South Asian countries.
The head of the county administration, Gong Shizhun, noted that the resumption of cross-border trade operations at the Nathu La mountain pass opens up new prospects for the development of mutually beneficial trade between residents of the border areas of the two countries.
As local authorities previously stated at the annual session of the People’s Congress of Sizang Autonomous Region, Sizang is increasing its level of openness and plans to open 12 border trade points this year in addition to the 14 already existing. –0–
