Islamabad, August 2 /Xinhua/ — At least seven people were killed and another 20 injured on Sunday as a result of a suicide bombing near a police station close to the site of a peace rally in Swat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in northwest Pakistan. This was reported by the district police chief Muhammad Umar.
“The explosion occurred at the gates of the police station at the moment when a mass event nearby was concluding,” he told Xinhua correspondent.
M. Umar clarified that among the dead and injured there are both civilians who participated in the rally and police officers.
According to him, the suicide bomber tried to enter the police station premises but was stopped at the main gate, where he detonated the explosive device.
Rescue teams and security service personnel arrived at the scene and transported the injured to nearby hospitals.
The police cordoned off the area and began conducting operational-search activities, while investigators started collecting evidence at the explosion site.
At the moment, no group has claimed responsibility for the terrorist attack. The authorities are conducting an investigation into the incident. –0–
