Deputy Plenipotentiary Representative of the President of the Russian Federation in the Northwestern Federal District Ivan Egorov paid an introductory visit to Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University.

The deputy plenipotentiary was welcomed by the rector of SPbPU, Andrey Rudskoy, the first vice-rector Vitaly Sergeev, the vice-rector for educational activities Lyudmila Pankova, the vice-rector for scientific work Yuriy Fomin, the vice-rector for additional and pre-university education Dmitry Tikhonov, and the scientific secretary Dmitry Karpov.

The visit was dedicated to familiarizing with the educational, scientific, and infrastructural resources of SPbPU, as well as the university’s directions and results in creating innovative materials and technologies. During the meeting, Andrey Rudskoy told the guest about the university, its history, development stages, and the current priority vectors of development. The deputy plenipotentiary was acquainted with the initial results of the admission campaign: the university received 273 thousand applications from applicants compared to last year’s 128 thousand. Ivan Igorevich was interested in what caused such a surge. To find the answer to this question, the guest was offered a tour of Polytech.

At the Research Building of “Technopolis Polytech,” scientific secretary Dmitry Karpov showed Ivan Egorov a model of the SPbPU campus and explained how its infrastructure will grow and develop with the start of the technopolis construction.

At the Polytechnic Supercomputer Center, the deputy plenipotentiary representative was informed about the center’s goals and objectives, its technical specifications, software and engineering infrastructure, as well as the projects implemented based on it.

The introduction to Polytechnic continued at the Scientific and Educational Center “Mechanical Engineering Technologies and Materials.” Its director, Pavel Novikov, demonstrated to the guest the capabilities of additive small-batch production of industrial parts: 3D printing sites in the workshop, equipment, and product samples.

After that, Ivan Egorov visited the Polytech TV studio and the Center for Open Education.

“When I was told that this year the number of applicants to the Polytechnic had more than doubled compared to last year, I became interested in understanding why the university’s popularity is growing. After seeing everything with my own eyes, it became clear.”— Ivan Egorov shared at the conclusion of the visit.

He also noted the value of the fact that not only experienced specialists but also students work in the labs and divisions of Polytech. This is important for their motivation and career guidance.
