Washington, July 29 /Xinhua/ — American military forces stated on Tuesday that they intercepted several ballistic missiles launched from Iran during an attempted “surprise attack” on American forces in the Middle East.
“Today at 5:45 PM Eastern Time, forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched several ballistic missiles from Iranian territory in an attempt to deliver a surprise strike on US forces deployed in the Middle East,” reported the US Central Command (CENTCOM) on the social network X.
“All Iranian missiles were successfully intercepted,” CENTCOM reported, adding that “US forces remain vigilant and are at a high state of readiness.”
Iran launched no more than four ballistic missiles, CNN reported citing a U.S. official.
There have been no comments from Tehran so far regarding the statements from the US.
Earlier on Tuesday, CENTCOM stated that U.S. military forces redirected 18 commercial vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz, disabled two, and boarded another two vessels in order to enforce what was called a maritime blockade of all Iranian ports.
More than 20 U.S. Navy warships are operating across the Middle East in support of military missions, according to a separate CENTCOM statement.
U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Monday that he decided to suspend U.S. strikes on Iran to give the negotiations another chance, while warning that if the talks fail, he could order new strikes. –0–
