Tokyo, July 29 /Xinhua/ — Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stated on Wednesday that the government has confirmed the death of 13 people as a result of the powerful earthquake that occurred the day before in Kumamoto Prefecture in the southwest.
Sanae Takaichi told journalists at the Prime Minister’s office that as of 8:30 a.m. local time, the death toll from the earthquake stood at 13 people, including deaths whose connection to the natural disaster is still under investigation.
According to her, the earthquake on Tuesday caused significant damage, including human casualties, building collapses, fires, and road damage.
“There are people who are still waiting for rescue, and we are racing against time,” she said.
The Prime Minister also announced that the second meeting of the government emergency response headquarters, which she heads, will take place on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. to further assess the situation and accelerate response and recovery measures.
