Under the chairmanship of Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko, a meeting of the organizing committee for the preparation and celebration of the 1000th anniversary of the founding of Kursk was held, which will be celebrated in 2032. During the meeting, the main events, plan, and concept for the celebration of the commemorative date were discussed.
The event was also attended by the chairman of the Russian Historical Society Association Sergey Naryshkin, the governor of the Kursk region Alexander Khinshtein, Deputy Minister of Culture Vladimir Osintsev, Deputy Minister of Transport Igor Kostyuchenko, Deputy Minister of Sports Mger Gandilyan, Deputy Minister of Health Evgeny Kamkin, Deputy Minister of Education Andrey Nikolaev, Deputy Minister of Finance Pavel Kadochnikov, chairman of PJSC Promsvyazbank Pyotr Fradkov, representatives of the state corporations Rosatom, VEB.RF, PJSC Sberbank of Russia, JSC Russian Railways and others.
Dmitry Chernyshenko noted that preparations for the landmark event—the celebration of the 1000th anniversary of the founding of Kursk—are underway according to the decree of President Vladimir Putin and the order of the Government.
“Kursk is a heroic city where history, culture, and nature organically intertwine. There is truly a unique atmosphere here. Today we have seen significant sports, scientific-educational, and youth facilities. The preparations for the anniversary are intended to become a real driver of the socio-economic development of the entire Kursk region. It is very important to attract the attention of the entire country to the city’s unique heritage. This large-scale work requires the consolidation of efforts from the government, business, expert team, and the public,” stated the Deputy Prime Minister.
He noted that the federal Government provides significant support to the Kursk region. Over three years—from 2024 to 2026—the region was allocated more than 90 billion rubles from the federal budget, and it actively participates in federal projects. For 2026, the subject is allocated interbudgetary transfers amounting to almost 32 billion rubles.
“The national projects ‘Family,’ ‘Youth and Children,’ and ‘Infrastructure for Life’ are being implemented on the largest scale in the region this year. This also helps prepare Kursk for the significant date. The task of our committee is to use joint efforts so that, despite the existing situation, what has been planned—most of which is already designed and thought through—can be realized. I am confident that together with you we will hold the anniversary events at the highest level, put the infrastructure in order, and solve the problems,” emphasized Dmitry Chernyshenko.
Separately, the Deputy Prime Minister noted the importance of youth participation in preparing for the celebration. This involves integrating the anniversary theme into youth forums and patriotic events, organizing tourist programs for children and young people, launching creative workshops and cultural and educational projects. Among other things, the Deputy Prime Minister instructed to develop the excursion programs “More Than a Journey” and to advance the directions of the “Tavrida” art residency in the Kursk region.
“It is important to pay special attention to the revival of the historical center of Kursk – this was also emphasized by our President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin. Therefore, today we discussed not only the preparations for the anniversary itself but also proposals for approaches to significant infrastructure projects. We need to decide and prioritize the projects that will be completed by 2032, and time the start of implementation with the celebration,” said Dmitry Chernyshenko.
The chairman of the Russian Historical Society association, Sergey Naryshkin, stated that he expects a dedicated museum space devoted to the heroism of the defenders of the Kursk region to appear there in the coming years. He reminded that, at the initiative of the head of the region, a historical and cultural cluster “Kursk Fortress” is being created in the subject, which will unite 10 museum institutions, and 4 of the 9 sites in the cluster territory will be restored as part of the federal project “Historical Memory” of the United Russia party. In Kursk State University, an international historical school will be organized in September this year, bringing together more than 100 students and young scientists from Russia and abroad.
“We understand the difficult situation of today. In order to fulfill the President’s directive and completely reform the approaches to the celebration of the 1000th anniversary, we are involving business to the maximum extent, but only with the efforts of the region and entrepreneurs we will not solve such an important and strategic task – preparing Kursk for the 1000th anniversary. This is already a project of federal significance. And government support in its implementation is fundamental,” said the Governor of the Kursk Region, Alexander Khinshtein.
The event took place during the working visit of Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko to Kursk. As part of it, he, together with Alexander Khinshtein, evaluated a number of cultural heritage sites and familiarized himself with the large-scale project to create the “Kursk Fortress” cluster for the 1000th anniversary of Kursk.
Currently, with the support of the Ministry of Culture, the repair of the building of the former men’s gymnasium is underway, where the Kursk Regional Museum of Local Lore is planned to be housed in the future. The Ministry of Culture has already signed contracts for the development of project documentation for four cultural heritage sites that are part of the ensemble of the Znamensky Monastery: the cathedral, the Archiereus House, the Resurrection Church, and the Tuskar Gates. The deadline for the completion of project work on these sites is October 2027, with total funding exceeding 105 million rubles.
This year, the restoration of the Fence Tower and the former District Court building will begin, where the Kursk State Archaeological Museum is planned to be opened. A total of 10 museums will open within the cluster territory, including 4 federal ones – branches of the State Russian Museum, the Rublyov Museum, the Bakhrushin Theater Museum, as well as a satellite museum of the State Historical Museum.
Dmitry Chernyshenko reviewed the development plans for Pervomaisky Park, the embankment, and visited the railway station. The Minister of Transport and Highways of the Kursk region, Alexander Zamaraev, reported on the development of a project to create a transport interchange hub. This facility is included in the list of activities dedicated to the celebration of the city’s 1000th anniversary.
The Deputy Prime Minister also assessed the infrastructure of the Voskresensky Monastery and the Znamensky Cathedral.
