Manila, July 22 /Xinhua/ — Presenting China’s fundamental position regarding a series of recent negative remarks and actions by the United States, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Wednesday called on the United States to respect the core interests of China, firmly adhere to the one-China principle, properly manage differences, and address China’s legitimate concerns.
Wan Yi, who is also a member of the CPC Central Committee Politburo, made the corresponding statement during a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in the Philippine capital Manila.
According to the head of the Chinese foreign affairs department, the current year has become a “big year” in relations between China and the United States following the historic summit in Beijing, where the leaders of the two countries set the course for building Sino-American relations based on constructive strategic stability.
This, he continued, is an important progress in finding a path to peaceful coexistence between two major powers, meeting the fundamental interests of both peoples and the common expectations of the international community.
As noted by the head of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the task of both sides now is to stay on the path outlined by the heads of the two states, to remove obstacles and overcome barriers in order to turn the agreements reached by the leaders into commitments and concrete actions at the level of the entire government and in all spheres.
Wan Yi called for promoting peace and security worldwide through bilateral strategic stability and giving an important impetus to international cooperation by means of constructive interaction between China and the United States.
The participants of the meeting also exchanged views on the most pressing international and regional issues.
The parties noted that the meeting was pragmatic, positive, and constructive, and agreed to actively utilize the role of political and diplomatic channels, prepare for the next stage of high-level bilateral contacts, and strive for substantial progress in building a constructive strategic stability in China-US relations. –0–
