The UN is recording a rapid deterioration in the situation for the civilian population of Ukraine amid a new wave of long-range strikes targeting residential neighborhoods and critical infrastructure facilities.
A representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Tamin Al-Hitan, called the scale and intensity of the attacks “shocking” and emphasized the need for an immediate cessation of escalation. He reminded that civilians and civilian infrastructure are under special protection of international humanitarian law, and deliberate strikes against them “constitute war crimes.”
In recent days, numerous attacks resulting in the deaths and injuries of civilians have been recorded across Ukraine. On Sunday, Kyiv came under fire for the seventh time in a month: at least 35 ballistic and hypersonic cruise missiles were launched at the capital—this was the largest attack on the city since the start of the full-scale invasion. One person was killed, 20 were injured, and damage was recorded in five districts.
In Zaporizhzhia, planned aerial bombs destroyed part of a five-story residential building, resulting in the deaths of three people and injuries to 41 others, including seven children. In Korotych near Kharkiv, a strike on the “Nova Poshta” terminal caused the deaths of four employees and injuries to twenty people.
Risks are also increasing for maritime transportation. On Sunday, cruise missiles struck a merchant vessel flying the flag of Guinea-Bissau shortly after departing from a port near Odesa. Reports indicate ten fatalities, including at least eight crew members, and seven injured.
The UN also records reports of ongoing long-range attacks by Ukraine on targets within the territory of the Russian Federation. According to Russian authorities, on the night of July 17–18, strikes on the logistics centers of the company Wildberries in the Moscow and Tambov regions resulted in the death of eight people and injuries to 86.
