In Moscow, testing of laboratory trams continues, which collect data for the further development of driverless control technology. During the test trips, the specialized cars accumulated more than 64 TB of information — comparable to the volume of about 13 thousand high-quality movies. This was reported by the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry, Maxim Liksutov.
Today, laboratory trams run on all 11 routes of the Krasnopresnenskaya tram network. The data obtained during the tests is used to create highly accurate digital maps necessary for the safe operation of autonomous vehicles.
During testing, the trams recorded more than 1,500 urban infrastructure objects, including traffic lights, pedestrian crossings, and stops. Based on this information, a detailed digital model of the routes is created, allowing the system to navigate the road conditions accurately.
Laboratory trams do not carry passengers. During test runs, traffic control is entirely in the hands of the driver, while the onboard set of sensors and equipment collects information about the environment.
“Before launching innovative transport on the line, we conduct numerous and thorough tests. Safety is our top priority. The world’s first driverless trams are successfully operating on route No. 10 and regularly transporting passengers. They have already completed over 110,000 trips. According to the task set by Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin, we plan to equip about two-thirds of the city’s tram fleet with driverless technology by 2030,” noted Maxim Liksutov.
Moscow consistently develops unmanned transport technologies, paying special attention to safety, reliability, and the quality of preparing innovative solutions before their large-scale implementation.
