London, July 21 /Xinhua/ — The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations /UKMTO/ late Monday evening confirmed that a tanker was attacked in the area of the Strait of Hormuz. The vessel reported via VHF Channel 16 that it was hit by an unidentified projectile.
The administration stated that it received several reports about an incident that occurred approximately 8 nautical miles northeast of the settlement of Limah in Oman.
An exclusive recording of radio communications between the ships, provided to the Xinhua correspondent by a crew member on Monday night, showed that the attacked vessel is a tanker flying the Kuwaiti flag, carrying oil and chemicals.
According to the report, two crew members sustained minor injuries. Thick smoke was rising from the damaged section and the bunker tank.
The crew reported that the bunker tank caught fire, and the ship’s main engine failed. Unable to cool the bunker tank, they took their places by the lifeboats and prepared to abandon the ship. –0–
