Recently, the film screening ceremony of the youth film project “Looking China” 2026 was successfully completed at Beijing Normal University. The event lasted three months and brought together young participants and mentors from 38 countries. Working in nine provinces, autonomous regions, and centrally administered cities of China, they created 90 short documentary films dedicated to the theme “Urban Color, Fashion, and Energy.” The participants familiarized themselves with life on Chinese streets and alleys, immersed themselves in the daily life of city dwellers, and at the intersection of historical heritage and modern trends discovered the unique atmosphere of Chinese cities, capturing what they saw with their cameras.
Yu Yijun, member of the standing committee of the Party Committee of Beijing Normal University, noted in his welcoming speech that the youth film project “A Look at China” has attracted young people from more than a hundred countries over 16 years. In their works, project participants tell about the historical heritage, folk customs, ecological construction, and modern transformations of China from the perspective of youth and in a language understandable to an international audience. About a thousand films have been produced during this time. The project has become an important platform that promotes strengthening mutual understanding, deepening friendship, and developing cultural dialogue between young people from China and other countries, as well as the mutual enrichment of civilizations.
Huan Huilin, Distinguished Professor at Beijing Normal University and founder of the “View on China” project, emphasized that this initiative is not only an important window through which the world gets to know China but also a platform for strengthening mutual understanding and friendship between Chinese and foreign youth. Thanks to personal experiences and cinematic creativity, foreign participants discover China, perceive and comprehend it through their own eyes, capturing vivid scenes of social life and the sincere feelings of ordinary people.
At the film screening ceremony, six short films were presented, reflecting different perspectives and artistic styles. These films portray a multifaceted image of modern China from various angles, where traditions and modernity intertwine, and the vibrant everyday life combines with the energy of development. The authors of the works were young directors from different countries, including Singapore, Romania, Spain, Italy, Honduras, and Germany.
