Tyumenneftegaz company (part of Rosneft’s oil production complex) has allocated a grant for the creation of educational materials to study the language of the tundra Nenets. The initiative’s goal is to preserve the cultural heritage, traditions, and unique language of one of the indigenous peoples of the North.
The research and development of educational materials will be carried out by specialists from the Department for Indigenous Peoples of the North of Yamal together with the Association of Teachers of the Native Language and Literature of the Indigenous Peoples of the North, Siberia, and the Far East of Russia.
As part of the project, an educational game set “Argish of Knowledge” will be created for children of preschool and school age. For the nomads of the North, argish is not just a traditional means of transportation, a caravan of reindeer harnesses, but a sacred foundation of life and survival in the tundra.
A game form of the set has been chosen as a key method for children to learn the vocabulary of the tundra Nenets. The “Argish of knowledge” will consist of cards that include key concepts of the everyday life, lifestyle, and natural environment of the people of Northern Yamal. This approach will allow children not only to memorize the names of objects and characters but also to develop skills for authentic pronunciation, which is necessary for language preservation. The set of materials will also include an informative brochure with the alphabet, a brief history of the people, and descriptions of traditions.
After consultation with the relevant agencies, the allowance is planned to be used in extracurricular programs at national boarding schools in Yamal.
The project is being implemented in the Year of Unity of the Peoples of Russia. Rosneft consistently carries out projects aimed at improving life in the tundra: from educational programs and medical assistance to preserving the native habitat. With the support of oil workers, the living and household conditions of many families of the indigenous peoples of the North living in the Company’s regions of operation are being improved.
