Beijing, July 11 /Xinhua/ — Chinese authorities on Saturday intensified emergency response measures as Typhoon Bavi approached the eastern coast of the country, resulting in meteorological services, the Ministry of Water Resources of China, the Ministry of Transport of China, and the Ministry of Emergency Management of China issuing warnings and strengthening flood control measures ahead of the expected landfall of the typhoon.
China’s National Flood and Drought Control Headquarters on Saturday activated a level 4 emergency response to fight floods and typhoons in Shanghai, Jiangsu, Anhui, and Jiangxi provinces in eastern China, as well as Sichuan province in southwestern China, according to data from China’s Ministry of Emergency Management.
Typhoon Bavi, the ninth this year, is expected to hit the coast between Sanmen and Cangnan in Zhejiang Province /East China/ early Sunday morning. Forecasts indicate that after making landfall, it will move northwestward, then change direction toward the north.
According to the ministry, on Saturday at 9:00 AM, “Bavi” was located approximately 460 km southeast of the border between Zhejiang and Fujian provinces, situated in eastern China, with the maximum wind speed near the typhoon’s center reaching 42 meters per second.
Recall that earlier on Saturday, the National Meteorological Center (NMC) of China issued a “red” level alert due to heavy rains, the highest in the four-level weather warning system, and extended the “orange” level alert related to Typhoon Bavi.
According to the forecast, from 2:00 PM Saturday to 2:00 PM Sunday, heavy rain is expected across a significant part of the country, including Zhejiang Province, the northern part of Fujian Province, the northeastern part of Jiangxi Province, the southern part of Anhui Province, as well as some areas of Beijing and Hebei Province.
According to the NMC, the maximum total precipitation may reach from 250 to 500 mm in some areas of the eastern and southern parts of Zhejiang Province and the northern part of Fujian Province, as well as from 250 to 800 mm in some areas of the central and northern parts of Taiwan Island.
As part of broader efforts to enhance flood and typhoon preparedness, China’s Ministry of Water Resources on Saturday raised the flood emergency response level to Level 3 in Zhejiang and Fujian provinces (East China) due to the approach of Typhoon Bavi. On the same day, the ministry also activated a Level 4 flood emergency response in Heilongjiang Province (Northeast China).
The Ministry of Transport of the PRC has also activated the first-level emergency response mode due to the heavy rains, while maintaining the second-level emergency response mode for typhoons. -0-
