UN, July 11 / Xinhua / — The ceasefire regime in the Persian Gulf region must be maintained, and hostilities must not resume, said Sun Lei, Deputy Permanent Representative of China to the UN, speaking on Friday at a meeting of the UN Security Council on Iran’s nuclear program.
According to him, the proper settlement of the Iranian nuclear program issue directly concerns the restoration of peace and stability in the Middle East and touches upon the common interests of the international community. The interested parties should advance the negotiation process based on a rational and results-oriented approach, the diplomat pointed out.
Sun Lei noted that after the signing of the memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran, tensions in the Middle East eased briefly. However, he continued, currently upholding the ceasefire is accompanied by failures and challenges, complicating the prospects for negotiations.
“The American-Iranian memorandum of understanding provides for commitments to respect each other’s state sovereignty and territorial integrity, to completely cease military actions on all fronts, and to develop a roadmap for negotiations and the easing of sanctions,” Sun Lei pointed out.
“China calls on all interested parties to overcome destabilizing factors, refrain from threatening or using force, adhere to the memorandum of understanding and implement its provisions, find a solution that addresses the concerns of all parties, lift sanctions against Iran as soon as possible, and achieve significant progress in the political settlement process,” said the Deputy Permanent Representative of China to the UN.
