Provinces in Eastern China Raised Emergency Response Level for Typhoon

Hangzhou, July 10 /Xinhua/ — The Chinese provinces of Zhejiang and Fujian in the eastern part of the country on Thursday raised the emergency response level to typhoon to the third level in connection with the approach of Typhoon Bavi, the ninth this year, to the country’s coast.

The Zhejiang Province Flood, Drought and Typhoon Relief Headquarters has urged local authorities and competent departments to closely monitor the situation related to the typhoon’s development and its changes, as well as to properly carry out work on monitoring, early warning and forecasting alongside measures to evacuate residents from dangerous areas.

According to the provincial meteorological service, at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Typhoon Bavi was located approximately 1,580 km southeast of the city of Keelung, Taiwan.

The typhoon is approaching the northeast coast of Taiwan and is expected to make landfall on Saturday evening in the coastal area between the city of Fuzhou in Fujian Province and the city of Wenling in Zhejiang Province.

According to the forecast, the natural disaster will bring heavy rains and gusty winds to Zhejiang Province.

As of 3:00 PM on Thursday, a total of 17,110 people had been evacuated across Zhejiang province. In total, 4,509 emergency rescue teams comprising more than 170,000 people were put on alert to support the typhoon response efforts in various regions at any moment.

The authorities of Fujian Province also raised the typhoon emergency response level to three on Thursday, urging fishing vessels and fishermen to return to the ports.

In villages and settlements, local authorities have also ordered the patrolling of reservoirs, mountain water bodies, areas prone to geological disasters, and low-lying areas susceptible to flooding.
