UN, July 10 /Xinhua/ — China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Sun Lei, on Thursday called for de-escalation of the Ukrainian conflict, stating that its current trajectory of development is cause for concern.
According to him, the conflicting parties carry out frequent military attacks characterized by higher intensity, larger scale, and broader scope than before, resulting in significant civilian casualties and damage to infrastructure.
China condemns any attacks on civilians and calls on the relevant parties to stop attacks on peaceful residents and civilian infrastructure, said Sun Lei at the Security Council meeting.
He also called on the parties to show restraint and make every effort to de-escalate the situation.
“Recently, the parties have found themselves in a vicious circle of military confrontation and retaliatory actions, which not only causes immense suffering to the civilian population but also further fuels hatred and exacerbates conflicts, making the path to peace negotiations even more thorny and difficult,” said Sun Lei.
“The parties must remain calm and show restraint, strictly adhere to the norms of international humanitarian law, and make every effort to de-escalate, thus creating conditions for the earliest cessation of fire and hostilities,” he noted.
