Beijing, July 9 /Xinhua/ — The Navy of the People’s Liberation Army of China (PLA Navy) has sent its fleet to conduct training in the relevant waters of the open sea, which is part of the annual plan of the PLA Navy, said Chen Xi, an official spokesperson of the Ministry of National Defense of China.

These drills comply with international law and international practice. They are not directed at any specific country or target, Chen Xi added at the latest departmental press conference on Thursday.

He made this statement while commenting on Japan’s recent statements about the operations of PLAN ships in waters near Japan, which some analysts believe were a response to recent joint naval exercises involving the US, Japan, and other countries.

According to Chen Xi, the purpose of the training is to further enhance the ability of the PLA Navy to protect China’s national sovereignty, security, and development interests.
