At the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT), under the chairmanship of Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko, a meeting of the university’s supervisory board was held. They discussed the results of MIPT’s development for 2021–2025 and the program through 2036.
Also participating in the meeting were Minister of Science and Higher Education Valery Falkov, Deputy Minister of Defense Vasily Osmakov, MIPT Rector Dmitry Livanov, and others.
Dmitry Chernyshenko noted that this year is special for Fiztekh – the 80th anniversary of its founding as a faculty of MSU and the 75th anniversary of its establishment as an independent university.
“MIPT is a large and incredibly important university for our country. It continues to develop at a rapid pace, and its total income is steadily increasing. This is partly thanks to support measures from the Government and the Ministry of Education and Science. Over six years of participation in the “Priority-2030” program, the total amount of the federal grant reached almost 4.7 billion rubles. The university hosts an advanced engineering school, and last year a world-class scientific center in the field of microelectronics was established. One of the most important decisions was the Government’s decision to create the innovative scientific and technological center “Phystech Valley.” We expect that it will become an important tool for integrating education and business. This center is intended to unite research laboratories and high-tech companies that value cooperation with Phystech,” said Dmitry Chernyshenko.
He also noted the significant role of MIPT in training personnel and emphasized that it is important to preserve its spirit in the development of Fiztekh.
Valery Falkov reminded that in January of this year, MIPT became a participant in a pilot project for transitioning to a new model of higher education. Enrollment of applicants is conducted for basic and specialized level programs, as well as for postgraduate studies.
“Phystech can and should become one of the leaders of the new model of higher education. The university confidently joined the project, immediately announcing admission to pilot programs for all freshmen – this is a challenging but correct decision,” he emphasized.
The minister also noted MIPT’s achievements in developing student technology entrepreneurship. Today, two startup studios operate on the university campus, and it is here that all key tools of the program are planned to be brought together. He separately thanked the university staff for launching the industrial postgraduate program.
The main results of the development program were presented by MIPT’s rector Dmitry Livanov. He emphasized that based on the results from 2021 to 2025, the institute strengthened its position as the undisputed leader of domestic higher education and fundamental science. During the reporting period, the university created a full-fledged engineering and technological infrastructure that ensures the integration of scientific research, experimental design developments, and their subsequent implementation in the real sector of the economy. An important event was the launch in 2025 of the innovative scientific and technological center “PhysTech Valley,” as well as the opening of major engineering institutes in five priority areas: quantum microelectronics, biomedicine, advanced energy storage devices, artificial intelligence, and space, aviation technologies, and communications. These projects lay the foundation for the institute’s next stage of development as a world-class scientific and technological center.
“Over the past five years, MIPT has significantly strengthened its position as a leader in domestic higher education and fundamental science. The university has established a full engineering and technology chain – from a scientific idea to a prototype and implementation in the real economic sector, and has built systematic cooperation with high-tech partner companies. During this time, 13 new laboratories have been opened under the leadership of leading scientists, the volume of R&D per academic staff member has reached 10.4 million rubles, and the total amount of RSF grants has exceeded 1.36 billion rubles, while our scientists are among the leaders in the number of publications in leading world journals. The average USE score of those enrolled in MIPT’s first year remains very high. We deliberately cultivate students’ interest in research work from the very first semesters: all without exception participate in real scientific projects, work in laboratories, and receive grant support.”Such immersion in science at the student stage naturally motivates the best graduates to continue their research already in postgraduate studies, and 63% of them successfully defend their dissertations strictly on time, which is a very high indicator for the academic environment,” said Dmitry Livanov.
The MIPT development program until 2036 includes the implementation of the “Big Phystech” model. The document is synchronized with the new phase of the federal project “Priority-2030” and is directly connected to the tasks of ensuring Russia’s technological leadership.
The new development strategy aims to position Fiztekh as a center of scientific and technological thought, uniting the university, alumni community, industrial partners, and research institutes into a single ecosystem. This model encompasses the entire innovation lifecycle – from the emergence of a scientific idea to the implementation of a ready technological solution and the creation of a high-tech business.
During his visit to MIPT, Dmitry Chernyshenko evaluated the work of the admissions committee and spoke with applicants planning to enroll at Phystech. Among them were students who scored 300 and 400 points on the Unified State Exam, prize-winners of the final stage of the All-Russian School Olympiad, applicants to specialized higher education and postgraduate programs engaged in scientific research, as well as an applicant from Syria.
As of July 9, more than 5 thousand applications have been submitted to MIPT, of which over 3.7 thousand are for basic higher education programs (against 1,117 state-funded places). This figure significantly exceeds the data for the same period in 2025, indicating a high interest of applicants in new educational programs and the growing prestige of engineering and scientific specialties.
Dmitry Chernyshenko and Valery Falkov also evaluated the university’s scientific developments, including the dry aerosol printing printer, which was created within the framework of the federal project “Development of domestic civil instrument engineering for scientific research.”
