Beijing, July 9 /Xinhua/ — Chinese police have launched a nationwide campaign to combat criminal activities that pose a threat to birds and other wildlife, as part of further measures to strengthen ecological protection.
During an operation that will last from late June to December, the focus will be on curbing illegal hunting, primarily carried out using firearms and drones, as well as the consumption of wild animal meat and the sale of these products through online platforms, the Ministry of Public Security of the PRC announced on Thursday.
The ministry ordered operations covering all links in the criminal chain, including poaching, buying and selling of wild animals, as well as decisive measures to dismantle the criminal network in order to eliminate criminal groups.
In addition, it is necessary to decisively break criminal “black” and “gray” production chains, create a reliable barrier of environmental safety, and promote the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature, the agency emphasized.
Chinese police also intend to strengthen cooperation with law enforcement agencies of other countries in combating cross-border wildlife crimes.
There are 1,505 bird species living in China, which accounts for about one-sixth of all bird species in the world, with more than 800 species being migratory. China is also one of the most important corridors for global bird migration: 4 out of 9 major migratory routes pass through its territory.
