Beijing, July 8 /Xinhua/ — Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday called for accelerated achievement of high-level self-sufficiency and strengthening of own capabilities in science and technology, as well as efforts to support and stimulate Chinese modernization through scientific and technological innovation.
Xi Jinping, who is also the General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, made this statement in Beijing at a meeting dedicated to awarding national science and technology prizes, a conference with academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, as well as the 11th National Congress of the China Association for Science and Technology.
He emphasized that the period of the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030) is a key stage for solving the most complex tasks in turning China into a strong scientific and technological power.
“We must seize the historic opportunity, be prepared for the challenges of the era, accelerate the achievement of a high level of self-sufficiency and strengthen our own capabilities in science and technology, as well as take confident steps forward toward the goal of building a strong scientific and technological power by 2035,” Xi Jinping noted.
At the meeting, Xi Jinping presented the 2025 Highest National Science and Technology Award to Chen Liquan, a researcher at the Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), and Ben De, a researcher at China Electronics Technology Group Corporation and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. After awarding the medals and certificates to the two scientists, Xi Jinping shook their hands and extended his congratulations.
Xi Jinping and other party and state leaders, together with two top prize laureates, presented certificates to representatives of laureates of other awards, including the State Prize in Natural Sciences, the State Prize in Technological Inventions, and the State Prize in Scientific and Technological Progress. -0-
