Kunming, July 8 /Xinhua/ — The volume of cross-border rail freight between China and Laos has exceeded 20 million tons since the opening of this railway line in December 2021, marking another milestone in the development of this international railway corridor, China Railway Kunming Group Co., Ltd. reported on Wednesday.
According to the data of the mentioned company, as of the first half of Wednesday, more than 20 million tons of goods have been transported via the China-Laos railway as part of cross-border shipments, and more than 23 thousand cross-border freight trains have operated.
Since the commissioning of this railway on December 3, 2021, the railway authorities of China and Laos have closely cooperated to strengthen freight transportation arrangements, as well as to enhance capacity and transportation efficiency, which has contributed to the steady growth of cross-border freight volumes.
In the first year of operation of the railway, the volume of cross-border cargo transportation exceeded 1 million tons. The total volume of transportation exceeded 5 million tons and 10 million tons by the end of 2023 and 2024, respectively.
Since the beginning of 2026, cross-border freight transportation by rail between China and Laos continues to gain momentum. This year, a total of 3.16 million tons have been transported on this railway route as part of cross-border freight transportation, with the average daily volume of cross-border freight standing at around 17 thousand tons, indicating steady growth compared to the same period last year and once again highlighting the role of the China-Laos railway as a corridor connecting China with Southeast Asia.
Currently, rail freight on the China-Laos railway covers 19 countries and regions worldwide, including Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, and Bangladesh. To date, the range of transported goods has expanded from just over 10 categories at the time of the railway’s opening to more than 3,800 items.
