Ankara, July 8 /Xinhua/ — U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday during the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit held in the Turkish capital announced an immediate cessation of all trade relations with Spain, including visits, criticizing Madrid for insufficient participation in the alliance’s activities.
Speaking to journalists together with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte before the main summit meeting, D. Trump stated: “Spain is a hopeless case. We no longer want to conduct any trade business with Spain.”
Then the American president publicly instructed his administration to sever trade ties with this country. Addressing US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, the American leader noted: “Spain is a terrible NATO partner. They do not participate, they do not pay. I don’t want to have anything to do with Spain. Stop all trade with Spain, including visits.”
Madrid recently refused to meet the new NATO defense spending target of 5 percent of GDP and also did not allow the United States to use Spanish airspace and territory for operations during the war with Iran. –0–
