UN, July 7 /Xinhua/ — The UN General Assembly (UNGA) on Monday decided to maintain the status of the Human Rights Council (HRC) as its subsidiary body, adopting the draft resolution titled “Status of the Human Rights Council” without a vote.
The UN General Assembly also decided to reconsider the status of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues no earlier than the 90th and no later than the 95th session.
In its resolution, the UN General Assembly recognized that peace and security, development, and human rights are pillars of the UN system and the foundation of collective security and well-being, and also noted that development, peace and security, and human rights are interconnected and mutually reinforcing. Furthermore, the resolution emphasized the importance of adequate and sustainable funding for the Human Rights Council and its mechanisms.
The Human Rights Council, established in 2006 by the UN General Assembly and consisting of 47 member states, is an intergovernmental body within the UN system responsible for strengthening activities to promote and protect human rights worldwide, as well as for reviewing cases of human rights violations and developing recommendations on them. –0–
