Hangzhou, July 7 /Xinhua/ — On Monday, a round table was held in the city of Hangzhou (administrative center of Zhejiang Province, East China) with the participation of representatives from the cultural heritage sectors of China and Uzbekistan, who gathered to hold a dialogue on the better protection of two World Cultural Heritage sites – Liangzhu and Samarkand, ancient cities of China and Uzbekistan.
At the event, experts and scientists from two countries exchanged experiences and research findings concerning technical methods in fields ranging from archaeological excavations to heritage conservation, discussed challenges facing sustainable heritage management and appropriate response measures, and explored opportunities to expand the use of digital intelligent technologies in the presentation of cultural heritage sites.
The director of the Liangzhu Museum, Xu Tianjin, noted that Liangzhu means “beautiful islet on the water,” and Samarkand, according to one version, translates as “fertile soil.” “Both names carry good wishes and prosperity,” he emphasized.
According to Jiang Bo, Deputy Chairman of the Board of the China Committee of the International Council on Monuments and Sites, both sides can jointly discuss how to properly carry out the work of heritage protection and presentation.
According to the event organizers, Hangzhou and Samarkand are cities that have established relations through international friendly exchanges. The holding of the above-mentioned dialogue is aimed at more effective exchange of experience in the field of cultural heritage preservation, scientific research, and the development of both cities.
Located in the city of Hangzhou, the Liangzhu ruins have gained worldwide recognition as evidence of the existence of Chinese civilization dating back at least 5,000 years. In 2019, the ruins of the ancient city were included in the UNESCO World Heritage list.
Similar dialogues were previously held, bringing together specialists and experts on the ruins of Liangzhu and several well-known monuments and landmarks from other countries, including Stonehenge in the United Kingdom, Toledo in Spain, and Rome in Italy. -0-
