Beijing, July 7 /Xinhua/ — China has taken measures to combat floods and respond to emergencies related to typhoons “Maesak” and “Bavi,” which may bring heavy rains and increase the risk of flooding in several river basins across the country, the Ministry of Water Resources of China reported on Tuesday.
The Ministry of Water Resources of the PRC held a meeting to analyze the situation development and potential impact of these two typhoons, as well as to develop measures for flood prevention and response to possible emergencies.
Recent heavy rains caused by Typhoon Maysak, the tenth typhoon this year, have led to extensive flooding in some areas of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region (Guangxi, South China) in the Zhujiang River basin. According to the ministry, ongoing rains and floods may pose an additional threat.
Earlier on Tuesday, the General Office of Civil Affairs raised the flood emergency response level to red, the highest in the emergency response system. Later, a “red” alert for floods was also declared in the neighboring Guangdong province.
According to the ministry, Typhoon “Maysak” is expected to rage in China until July 9, causing a significant rise in water levels in the basins of rivers such as the Zhujiang, Yangtze, Huaihe, and Songliao. Water levels in some rivers are expected to exceed critical thresholds.
Typhoon “Bavi” is expected to approach the east coast of China on July 10 and rage for a week across six major river basins in the country, creating a high risk of flooding.
The aforementioned ministry called for intensified efforts to prevent floods in the GCHP, improve monitoring and early warning systems, ensure the safety of reservoirs, protect against mountain mudflows and overflows of small and medium rivers, as well as strengthen control over dams and water management facilities.
