Nanning, July 7 /Xinhua/ — As of 10 a.m. Tuesday, record rainfall and flooding caused by the heavy rains in the vicinity of Nanning, the administrative center of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region (Guangxi Zhuang AR, South China), have resulted in four deaths, with another eight reported missing. This information was confirmed by city authorities at a press conference dedicated to flood prevention and disaster relief.
In particular, in the city of Hangzhou and Binyang County, administratively subordinate to the city of Nanning, heavy rains set a new local record for precipitation in 24 hours. All the dead and missing are residents of Hangzhou.
A total of 84,700 residents of Hangzhou were affected by the disaster, 53,808 of them were evacuated. Evacuation is currently ongoing. In Binyang County, 8,606 people were affected, 8,150 of whom were evacuated.
On Tuesday at 7:00 a.m., the GCHAR authorities raised the flood emergency response level to the highest – “red.”
By that time, according to the regional hydrological center, the water level at 70 monitoring stations on 55 local rivers was 0.01-7.46 meters above the critical mark. According to forecasts, the high water level will persist on several river sections over the next 24 hours.
Deaths and evacuations in Nanning were related to Typhoon “Maysak,” which brought heavy rain to a large area of the city from 8 a.m. Saturday to 11 a.m. Monday.
