Stockholm, July 4 /Xinhua/ — Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Swedish counterpart Maria Malmer Stenergard agreed on Saturday after a meeting in Stockholm to strengthen cooperation, uphold multilateralism, and protect the international order based on international law.
At the meeting, Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee, recalled that China and Sweden share a long history of mutual exchanges. He noted that since the beginning of China’s policy of reform and opening up, the two countries have long been the largest trading partners for each other in Asia and Scandinavia, respectively.
According to Wang Yi, the valuable experience accumulated over decades of bilateral contacts is that both sides must maintain an objective and rational perception of each other, adhere to a position of mutual respect, seek common ground while eliminating differences, and remain committed to the principle of mutual benefit and win-win outcomes.
In recent years, Sino-Swedish relations have experienced certain vicissitudes, but after M. Malmer Stenergard’s visit to China last year, interstate ties continue to improve and gain positive momentum, Wang Yi noted, emphasizing that this trend should be preserved.
The Chinese Foreign Minister stated that China is ready to work with Sweden to promote the healthy and sustainable development of bilateral relations, expressing hope that the Swedish side will continue to strictly adhere to the one-China principle and strengthen the political foundation of bilateral relations.
Noting that currently more than 10,000 Swedish companies are engaged in trade with China, Wang Yi pointed out that China welcomes the further utilization by Swedish enterprises of the opportunities offered by China’s super-large market, its advanced production chains, and diversified application scenarios.
The Chinese diplomat also expressed hope that Sweden, in turn, will provide Chinese companies operating in the country with a fair, honest, and non-discriminatory business environment.
As Wang Yi pointed out, both sides can effectively use platforms such as the China-Sweden Joint Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation meetings to strengthen cooperation in emerging fields, including scientific and technological innovation, environmental transformation, and circular economy, as well as promote the expansion of cultural and humanitarian exchanges.
The head of China’s foreign affairs department further stated that today the international situation is undergoing complex and profound changes, such multilateral mechanisms as the UN are facing serious challenges, and the world risks returning once again to the law of the jungle.
Having described both China and Sweden as supporters of multilateralism and beneficiaries of free trade, Wang Yi stated that China is ready to strengthen cooperation with Sweden in order to jointly protect the international system, whose core is the United Nations, uphold the international order based on international law, and together overcome global challenges such as climate change.
M. Malmer Stenergard, for her part, stated that the Swedish government places great importance on its relations with China. She noted that Swedish-Chinese relations show good development dynamics, exchanges between the countries are continuously gaining momentum, and bilateral ties have enormous growth potential.
M. Malmer Stenergard assured that Sweden’s commitment to the One China principle will remain unchanged, emphasizing that Sweden will strengthen dialogue with China at all levels, fully utilize bilateral mechanisms such as joint committees on trade-economic and scientific-technical cooperation, and also expand cooperation in the fields of trade, green transformation, environmental and ecological protection, scientific and technological innovations, artificial intelligence, and sustainable development.
She reported that Sweden highly values the visa-free regime introduced by China for Swedish citizens and hopes to expand academic, educational, and personnel exchanges with the PRC in order to strengthen the social foundation of interstate friendship.
Noting that today’s world is full of instability and uncertainty, M. Malmer Stenergard stated Sweden’s readiness to strengthen communication with China and uphold the principles of international law and the rules of multilateral trade, promoting peace, development, and prosperity worldwide.
The parties also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common interest. –0–
