Recently, Zhejiang University narrowly surpassed Harvard University to take first place in the global Nature Index scientific output ranking. If organizations such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences are also considered, Chinese research institutions hold the majority of the top positions in the ranking. This indicates an accelerated transition of Chinese science from a trailing role to that of an equal, and in many areas, a leading participant in the global scientific process.
Partly, this result is related to changes in the evaluation methodology itself. In 2026, Nature Index significantly increased the weight of publications in applied and social sciences. At the same time, engineering technologies, materials science, chemistry, and artificial intelligence are among the strongest areas of Chinese science, which allowed its large-scale advantages to stand out even more prominently.
However, the deeper reasons for the success are related to the features of the Chinese model of scientific development. For many years, China has consistently increased its spending on research and development, creating the world’s largest scientific workforce and the most comprehensive system of scientific disciplines. Unlike the American model of “science for the sake of science,” the Chinese scientific system is closely linked to national strategic goals and the needs of industrial development. New energy, electric vehicles, advanced manufacturing technologies, and new materials are simultaneously priorities of state support and key directions of the country’s economic transformation. The model combining state strategic leadership and industrial development allows for efficient concentration of resources and rapid conversion of scientific achievements into a large number of high-quality research and publications.
At the same time, rankings cannot fully reflect the true value of scientific activity. The number of publications and citations is not an exhaustive indicator of scientific progress. China’s leadership in high-speed rail, electric vehicles, solar energy, and applied artificial intelligence is manifested more in technological integration and industrial implementation of developments than in the number of published scientific papers. The significance of large scientific and technical projects and breakthroughs in key technologies is often impossible to measure objectively solely by publication metrics.
The Chinese scientific community has long been aware of these limitations and has already begun a profound reform of the scientific activity evaluation system. The state encourages a shift toward criteria focused on innovative value, scientific potential, and practical contributions of researchers by implementing an assessment system based on the most significant scientific achievements.
Zhejiang University’s rise to first place marked an important milestone for Chinese science. However, for modern China, winning rankings is no longer the main goal. Much more important is whether the country can create more original scientific discoveries of global significance, ensure independence in critically important technological areas, and foster a healthier and more creative academic environment. Reaching the top of the ranking is both the culmination of one stage and the beginning of a new one. Chinese science will continue to move toward its strategic goal — building a global scientific and technological power.
