Moscow, July 1 /Xinhua/ — A solemn event dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Good-Neighborliness, Friendship, and Cooperation between China and Russia was held on Tuesday at the Moscow State Pedagogical University. The event was organized by the Society of Russian-Chinese Friendship (SRCF) and was attended by Russian politicians and diplomats, public figures, as well as students from leading Moscow universities.

In his speech, the Ambassador of China to Russia, Zhang Hanhui, noted that 25 years ago the leaders of China and Russia, showing foresight, signed the Treaty of Good-Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation. According to him, this historic document defined the leitmotif of bilateral relations — friendship passed down from generation to generation, and the key value of the relationship became mutual steadfast support.

“It enshrines the basic principles: non-alliance, non-confrontation, and not targeting third countries. It confirms the right of each country to independently choose its social system and path of development, and also establishes a shared responsibility to preserve historical and cultural identity and traditional values. Thus, the Treaty laid a solid legal foundation for the long-term development of Chinese-Russian relations of good-neighborliness and comprehensive strategic interaction in the new century,” the diplomat emphasized.

The First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, Chairman of the ORKD Ivan Melnikov believes that the main task of the Treaty was to form a new type of relationship between the two great neighboring powers. He pointed out that the document became a solid legal and political foundation of Russian-Chinese relations in the 21st century, enshrining principles that have stood the test of time: equality, mutual respect, good-neighborliness, non-interference in internal affairs, respect for territorial integrity, strategic interaction, and mutual support on key development issues.

“Looking back at the path our countries have taken over these 25 years, it becomes clear that the Treaty has fully justified its historical purpose. It created the foundation of trust on which the current comprehensive partnership between Russia and China has grown and is vigorously developing. And since the signing of the Treaty, our relations have been progressing geometrically!” — stated I. Melnikov.

Evaluating the main achievements in the implementation of the Treaty, the Deputy Chairman of the ORKD Sergey Sanakoev told a Xinhua correspondent that the past 25 years have brought colossal growth in Russian-Chinese cooperation. “We have reached an unprecedentedly high level of relations. We are creating a model of relations between two responsible powers, and dozens of countries from the Global South are following us — these are the BRICS countries, the SCO, and all those countries that see the injustice of the existing world order and want to live in a more just, safer world,” he noted.

According to the First Deputy Chairman of the ORKD, recipient of the Order of Friendship of the PRC, Galina Kulikova, in the current unstable global situation, cooperation between Russia and China is of great importance. “Our relations are developing at all levels: interstate, interparty, between executive and legislative authorities. And most importantly, today our youth are involved in this,” she told Xinhua correspondent.

G. Kulikova also noted the important significance of large-scale projects implemented on the initiative of the leaders of the two countries, which concern the passing of friendship from generation to generation. “Currently, we are in the Years of Education, and before that there were the Years of Culture. How this culture brought our peoples closer! And education is our future. We must learn from each other, develop, and build our future,” she emphasized.
