Yangon, June 30 /Xinhua/ — At least five people were killed and about 15 are missing as a result of the collapse of a jade mine in Hpakant town, Kachin State in northern Myanmar, according to the state newspaper The Global New Light of Myanmar on Tuesday.
The incident occurred on Sunday: a waste dump collapsed at an abandoned jade mining site near the village of Namtmo.
Local authorities, volunteer groups, and residents of the settlement organized rescue operations despite the ongoing rain and the risk of further landslides.
In Hpakant, where jade considered among the best in the world is mined, landslides often occur during the monsoon season. Many local residents and migrant workers search for jade remnants at abandoned mining sites, despite serious risks.
