Moscow, June 26 /Xinhua/ — The Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to Russia, Lilian Darii, was summoned on Friday to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, where he was issued a firm protest and handed a verbal note due to the detention of Russian diplomats at Chisinau airport. This is stated in a message for the media published on the website of the Russian foreign policy department.
“On June 26, the Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to the Russian Federation L. Darii was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, to whom a decisive protest was declared and a verbal note was handed over in connection with the gross violation by the Moldovan side of the fundamental provisions of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961,” the document states.
The text specifies that on June 25, at Chișinău airport, diplomatic couriers of the Russian Foreign Ministry were subjected to many hours of delay. “They were presented with deliberately unacceptable and illegal demands regarding the inspection of diplomatic correspondence and the ‘voluntary’ surrender of mobile communication devices,” the ministry emphasized.
It is indicated that diplomats of the Russian embassy in Moldova were denied access to the airport’s restricted area to provide consular assistance to arriving employees of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs. As a result, despite advance notice by the Moldovan side about their arrival, the diplomatic couriers could not enter the territory of the republic and were forced to return to Russia.
The Russian diplomatic service reported that Moldova’s post was indicated as a gross violation of Article 27 of the 1961 Vienna Convention, according to which diplomatic couriers “enjoy personal inviolability and shall not be subject to arrest or detention under any circumstances,” and diplomatic mail “shall not be opened or detained.” –0–
