Beijing, June 26 /Xinhua/ — The world’s first global technical regulation for autonomous driving systems, jointly developed by China and several other parties, has been adopted, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China reported on Friday.
The regulation, known as the ADS GTR /Automated Driving Systems Global Technical Regulation/, was approved at the meeting of the World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations /WP.29/ of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe /UN ECE/, held in Geneva, Switzerland. It was jointly developed by China, the European Union, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and Japan.
ADS GTR establishes the main technical requirements for autonomous driving systems and defines the regulatory framework covering the entire product life cycle, creating a unified basis for the safe and orderly implementation of autonomous driving technologies.
Leading the work on the development of the main provisions of the regulations, China shared data on its tests and practical application, as well as presented dozens of technical proposals covering areas such as dynamic driving tasks, human-machine interaction, and also methods of testing and validation.
The above-mentioned ministry stated that China is accelerating the development of mandatory national standards for autonomous driving systems. Compared to ADS GTR, the national standards will contain more detailed technical requirements for Level 3 and Level 4 autonomous driving systems, improving requirements for user training and information to prevent misuse and abuse.
In addition, China will continue to participate in the development of international standards and coordination of regulations for intelligent connected transport vehicles, while simultaneously improving internal technical standards and normative frameworks to ensure the safe implementation of autonomous driving technologies.
