Caracas, June 24 / Xinhua/ — Two powerful earthquakes, occurring one after another with a short interval, took place on Wednesday in Venezuela, causing the collapse of buildings in Caracas.
The Geological Survey of the USA /USGS/ recorded an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1, followed just a minute later by an even stronger tremor with a magnitude of 7.5. Both shocks struck the area of the coastal city of Moron, located approximately 160 km west of Caracas.
The earthquake epicenter was located not far underground, 10 km from the surface, which could have intensified its destructive effect.
The USGS stated that numerous casualties and significant damage cannot be ruled out. –0–
