Tokyo, June 25 /Xinhua/ — An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.9 occurred on Thursday near the coast of Iwate Prefecture in northeastern Japan. This was reported by the Japan Meteorological Agency.

According to its data, the underground tremor occurred at 7:30 local time near the eastern coast of Iwate at a depth of about 50 km. In the village of Hasikami in Aomori Prefecture, the intensity of the earthquake reached 6 on the Japanese 7-point scale. The vibrations were distinctly felt in Tokyo.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located at the point with coordinates 40.2 degrees north latitude and 142.3 degrees east longitude.
