Evacuation from the Hormuz Strait
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has published details of its plan to evacuate more than 11,000 sailors who found themselves blocked in the Strait of Hormuz area. These efforts are directly linked to ongoing negotiations between Iran and the USA, conducted in accordance with a previously signed memorandum of understanding. If the plan is successfully implemented, the number of vessels passing through the strait will return to pre-war levels. The agency is already in contact with ships through local staff to begin the operation. It is planned that between 500 and 600 commercial vessels will participate.
Violence in Sudan
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs warns that ongoing fighting threatens civilians in El-Obeid, the capital of the Sudanese state of North Kordofan. The World Health Organization (WHO) has pre-positioned stocks of essential items in this area, including first aid supplies, disease prevention and outbreak response materials, as well as for reproductive health, maternal and child health, and support for adequate nutrition. These stocks are sufficient to provide assistance to more than 25,000 people.
Situation in Lebanon
According to the Department of Coordination of Humanitarian Issues, more and more Lebanese families are returning to their native settlements or considering the possibility of returning to the south of the country. As of last Friday, the number of people living in collective accommodation centers decreased from 103 thousand to approximately 72 thousand across the country. Nevertheless, serious concerns remain about safety risks associated, in particular, with the presence of unexploded ammunition and other explosive remnants of war.
Unmanned Vehicles
Today, the World Forum for the Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations (WP.29), held under the auspices of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), approved the first global regulatory framework for fully autonomous driving systems. The new document establishes uniform international safety requirements and a common certification methodology for such vehicles. The rules will come into force in about a month.
