Earthquakes in Venezuela
The United Nations organization is providing support to international efforts to eliminate the consequences of two powerful earthquakes that occurred in Venezuela. Rescuers continue search operations in the country’s capital Caracas and other affected areas where people may be trapped under the rubble. As a result of the disaster, at least 164 people have died, and another 971 were injured. The most severe situation has developed in the northern part of the country. Threats to the residents of Ukraine
Thousands of peaceful residents trapped in the line of fire in the occupied part of Ukraine’s Kherson region face a serious threat to their lives, lack of food and absence of medical assistance. This was reported on Thursday by the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in the country. The mission also documented a significant increase in the number of peaceful residents killed and wounded by drone strikes in the territory controlled by the Ukrainian government, as well as how the threat of such attacks limits access to basic services, humanitarian aid, and emergency support.
Record heat
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO), together with partners, is coordinating measures to protect public health in connection with the record heatwave that affected Europe at the end of June. Its consequences impact the economy, infrastructure, agriculture, and ecosystems. According to forecasts from one of the WMO regional centers, over the next two weeks, the extreme heat will spread across most of Western, Central, and Southern Europe, and then shift toward the Balkans. Air temperature in many regions will be 3–10 degrees above the climatic norm, and daytime maxima will exceed 35 degrees.
Migrants and refugees
A record number of forced migrants, thousands dead on migration routes, and growing humanitarian needs – this was the global migration situation in 2025. Despite funding cuts, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) provided assistance during the year to 17.8 million residents of 170 countries and territories. The issue is not only about border crossings. According to the organization’s new annual report, by the end of last year the number of internally displaced persons worldwide reached 82.2 million. More than 7,900 migrants died on the way.
